Inside Our Studios- Morocco Discovered
Morocco has always been a place of mysterious delights, but it seems especially appealing to today's modern explorer. Even if your clients prefer to watch Casablanca from the comfort of their own homes, infuse their interiors with intriguing treasures found in the famous souks of Marrakech by west elm’s intrepid buyers and designers.

The west elm team works with Aid to Artisans, an organization that creates economic opportunities for artisan groups, to help Moroccan craftspeople create one-of-a-kind objects that evoke the bustling market square of Jemaa el-Fna.
For example, Battani rugs, woven in vivid stripes that signify a weaver’s family crest, were hand selected by west elm buyers as floor coverings and to create accent pillows or larger poufs.

A number of hand-woven rugs in other styles and patterns are also available in these vibrant reds and oranges. No two rugs are exactly the same and range from larger-scale patterns like those found in the Diamond or Ruby Patterned rugs as well as more subtle overall color shifts like the variegated stripes in the Orange Ombre Shag. As refreshing as a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice, these sun-kissed hues would provide a welcome jolt of color to any room.
For a more neutral floor covering that incorporates subtle patterns and textures, consider the Mosaic Kilim rug woven in shades of bisque and tobacco. Like all of the west elm Moroccan treasures, each rug has its own pattern and colorway giving it an heirloom quality.
High-pile Berber Rugs, known as "White Giants, are worked in the same palette. These lush floor coverings measure approximately 8' x 10' and are hand-woven by Beni Ouarain tribes from Morocco's Middle Atlas region. They are exceptionally comfortable under foot.

Soft, ivory-hued Moroccan Wedding Blankets were traditionally given to Berber brides-to-be by their female relatives. Made from wool and cotton yarns they are said to bring good luck and can be used as throws, rugs or wall hangings. No two are the same.
In terms of accessories, the recycled aluminum Moroccan Metal Trays found in the crowded souks of Jemaa el-Fna are hand-tooled by master metalworkers. Each circa-1940s vintage tray is one of a kind and hand-hammered with a unique pattern.
Though made in India, the Hand-Blocked Silk Casablanca Pillow Cover is inspired by traditional Moroccan stonework and printed by artisans whose work has been certified authentic by the nonprofit organization Craftmark. The slight color variations make each piece one of a kind.
Any of these pieces will add complexity and a sense of global exploration to any decor. Here's looking at you and your Moroccan-inspired designs, kid!
