High Point Market Spring 2012: Fresh Pops of Color Abound

Highlights from this year's High Point Market – and what it says about design trends in the year ahead.

If you're familiar with my design work, you know I love pops of color and bold, graphic pattern. I often use them, whether I’m designing a suburban kitchen or an urban condo. My love for these elements is one of the reasons I was so excited about the trends I saw at High Point Market just a few weeks ago. There were tons of bright, fresh colors and some truly beautiful pieces that I’m dying to use in an upcoming project.

As a Style Spotter for the spring market, I had the opportunity to snap pictures of a few of my top picks for upcoming trends and share them via this Pinterest board. Looks like I'm not the only one who loves color! There were three items that had a runaway number of likes and repins.

First, this Lilly Pulitzer bar table and chair seemed to be a huge hit. I love the nod to a retro 70s-like set and the aqua lacquer finish reminds me of a West Coast beach.

Designed in a similar fashion, this Jade Nanjing bamboo chair from C.R. Laine is a definite standout. I think it’s safe to say bamboo is still hot -- as evidenced by these two pieces! If you saw my Hamptons Showhouse bedroom design last year, you may see the familiarity. I love this pattern and color. I'm so excited to see that it's on everyone's mind for 2012.

And finally, this fun and functional bar cart from Oomph also seemed to be a crowd favorite. I can imagine this in a primarily white sitting room. It's such a happy and feminine accent. I can just see it styled with beautiful clear and gold glassware.

When reflecting on why these pieces speak to me, I think it goes back to my overall design and business philosophy of being bold and having fun. Most of my projects are designed around a neutral palette, but then I bring in pops of color—like these fun finds from High Point—to add life.

I'm encouraged to see so much color at market. I think it's an indication that we all are still looking for a little more fun in our lives. Entertaining friends in our homes and spending time with people most important to us seems to still be a trending life philosophy and these bright and exciting pieces will help us do just that! I also think we can find cues to the way we all are looking to the future...a bright future that is!  I mean, it's hard not to smile at a pink coffee table or a Kelly green lacquered mirror, right? Just don't be afraid to "pop" a little color in your decor this year and invite your friends and family over to enjoy it too!
