Designer Challenge Judges’ Choice: Melissa Picheny
Designer: Melissa Picheny
Firm: declutter + design
Location: New York, NY
Congratulations to Melissa Picheny, Judge’s Choice of the Williams-Sonoma, Inc. Designer Marketplace Before & After Designer Challenge! While there were so many strong entries, the choice was a unanimous one from our panel of judges. We took a few minutes to talk with Melissa to learn more about her background and winning design.
Melissa founded declutter + design in 2004 with a mission to inspire, motivate and provide clients with simple yet timeless solutions to their organizational and spatial needs. She found that her clients all had a common theme in finding themselves “stuck” in their environment and feeling unable to move forward. Her focus turned to creating spaces that are “functionally-designed” in an environment that is livable, workable and stress-free. In addition to working one-on-one with residential clients, Melissa works with large corporations and growing business including Smith Barney, Newsweek and Eileen Fisher and is a contributor to REAL SIMPLE magazine.
The winning design that Melissa featured in the west elm Before & After Designer Challenge was a unit in the Time Warner Center in New York, NY. She staged this apartment to showcase the spacious rooms, high ceilings and breathtaking views. This property appeared in the New York Post’s Dream Homes and was sold shortly after its feature. The winning design featured the following west elm products: Tillary Modular Seating, Decal Square Drum Table, Moroccan Drum Table, Modern Farm Dining Table, Modern Farm Dining Bench, and Bridge Coffee Table.

And to all our judges, we extend a huge ‘thank you’! Our Judges’ Panel included Brad Ford, Interior Designer; Julia Noran, Founder of The Editor at Large; and Jonathan Orr, Design Director of Textiles at west elm. We know the decision wasn’t easy, and we’re so glad to have their participation in this hotly contested challenge!
