HAND/EYE at west elm

west elm always has something to inspire the creative muses of decorators and designers. This time, it’s a daring, philanthropic, art magazine called HAND/EYE created by founder and editor Keith Recker, a veteran of the American design industry. With a glamorous large format and surreally beautiful photography, the magazine focuses on the intersecting worlds of art, craft, design, philanthropy and enlightened consumption – and looks really good in the process.

But it’s not just good looks that compels us to carry HAND/EYE in all our stores – it’s good works, too. The magazine is part of the HAND/EYE fund, an organization that supports skilled artisans in their struggle to earn decent livelihoods. Keith founded this crucial fund in the wake of the 2010 Haiti earthquake to give artisan grants to those in need. His mission is to demonstrate how design and artisanship can become tools for economic development and social progress.

It’s an inspirational shot in the arm for all of us who feel removed from the origins of what we buy. A magazine like this reminds us that the objects of beauty around of have deep roots and real creators – be they local or from an ancient artisan community in India, Africa or Uzbekistan. Read about an Australian dye innovator and UK prison inmates who needlepoint (The Future of Folk). Get introduced to master weavers, embroiderers, potters and black smiths (Central Asia). HAND/EYE seems designed for the enlightened designer.

As someone who discovers amazing new talent in obscure places, Keith has been a long time design hero of ours. For more than 20 years, he has worked with many non-profit organizations (including Aid to Artisans and CARE International) to help artisans earn better incomes. We're frankly delighted to have Keith and his beautiful publication at west elm.

HAND/EYE is printed twice a year. Subscribe here or pick up your copy at any west elm store.
