Pottery Barn Drum Accent Tables

Pottery Barn’s fascination with historical objects has led us to replicate the raw beauty of ancient rain drums. From Southeast Asia, across Indonesia and through China, these original heavy bronze drums followed rains, wars and rites of passage for centuries. Though we use them today as one-of-a-kind accent tables that function indoors and out, these vessels once held significant, even mystical, meaning 2500 years ago. They were beaten in battle calls, used to summon ancestors and complete funeral rites. But the rain drum’s lasting legacy is its ability to lure the rain out of the skies and please the gods with its deep echo.

We’ve made sure that our modern-day rain drum retains the rich tribal designs of the ancient. Our Frog Rain Drum made of lightweight cast-aluminum features a traditional relief pattern of a radiating sun and botanical motifs embellished with raised tree frog figures. Our Thai-crafted Metal Drum features intricate concentric patterns suggesting the circle of life.

Today rain drums add a worldly authenticity to home furnishings, both interior and exterior. But they’re not simply decorative. From rich visual textures to the music they make when tapped by raindrops, these drums like its predecessors are designed to please all the senses.
