We first met Jason Polan outside the Museum of Modern Art where he was in the midst of a typically ambitious endeavor—drawing every person in New York. A self-described "freelance artist," Jason sketches random New Yorkers in subway stations, museums and restaurants each day and then posts them at night on his blog. And while it’s true that he’s the creator of the cult-hit, "The Every Piece Of Art in The Museum Of Modern Art Book,” Jason also happens to spend a lot of time at the American Museum of Natural History. When he showed us his simple line drawings inspired by the natural world, we were instantly captivated.
To create a collection of Jason Polan items for west elm, we worked in collaboration with the artist to translate his quirky universe of amoebas, spirals, planets, pods and neo-geo shapes into works of intriguing modern art for walls, tables, chairs and everything in between. We printed some of his line drawings on watercolor paper and then framed them in solid ash with acid free mats as our Framed Wall Art, and we used others to create textiles that became our room-changing Vidalia and Sketch Book Pillow Covers as well as upholstery for our Oliver chair. Still others we adapted into dinner- and glassware: With designs understated enough for every day, Jason’s Ditsy Dot Bowls and Circle Hatch Dinner Plates can easily replace plain white dishware, and his Glass Decoupage Trays and Tumblers add casual shots of color and bold strokes of style anywhere they land.
