west elm is making headlines with our collaboration with the celebrated designers of PATCH NYC. We invited Jon Ross and Don Carney, the superduo behind PATCH NYC, to put their vintage-inspired designs on the ceramic plates, framed art and pillows of our 2010 home collection. We’ve long admired their unique combination of high style tempered with a quirky flea market sensibility. We wanted to capture that authentic feel in objects that make you look twice. And make them affordable for everyone. Together we created a fresh look with mass appeal that redefines – and redesigns – the natural world.
Striking ink drawings of butterflies, turtles, pigeons, thistles and roses are rendered in brilliant detail by Don Carney on strong, simple backgrounds. But it’s more than just what meets the eye. It’s also how it’s made. Like art made of metallic letterpress renderings on archival paper, framed in chic, black, high-laquer frames. And pillows that were foil printed on chunky, textural linen for a subtle metallic sheen. And glazed white ceramic rectangles featuring bold black illustrations that play with proportion and perspective the way an artist’s canvas does.
The vintage character layers casually into every style, while the witty modern look adds individuality. Or, to quote Jon Ross in an interview with HGTV, “We wanted to design pieces that people could bring into their homes without having to completely redecorate. We added the metallics because we always like to incorporate something unexpected – plus who doesn't like a little bit of sparkle?”
With sparkle, wit and fine design, our PATCH NYC home collection is pure west elm – with special twist. And with prices starting at just $6.50, great style is now available to everyone.
