Make it beautiful and make it self-sufficient. That’s what we challenged the sought-after designer, stylist and all-around green thumb Shane Powers with when we asked him to update the indoor garden for us. Shane is one of those truly creative people whose diverse talents defy a label: In addition to developing artisan-made home accessories in exotic locations around the world and working as a seasoned set designer and prop stylist, he also has a supreme knack for turning flowers, leaves and branches into forests of pure imagination.

For west elm, Shane created a collection of completely new concepts for indoor gardening, devising four different kinds of vessels, each with a specific function. Even more impressively, he designed these pieces for the type of low-maintenance plants that require only water and air to grow—hardy specimens that even the most luckless indoor gardener can't kill.

The handblown glass spheres and oblong shapes in his Hanging Glass Bubble Collection hold dramatic-looking air plants, while the tall glass jars of his Water Lily Vessels are designed for floating water plants. His Neolithic Vessels, a series of classical Greek- and Roman-inspired earthenware forms, display every kind of flower and greenery imaginable. And his Cut Clay Cylinders + Glass Dome—a modular tiered mini-garden whose three earthenware planters and glass cloche look as good used apart as they do stacked together—adds architectural interest when planted with cacti and succulents.
